I think the endless vitriol I've read in the music press over the years, both from the 'journalists' and the 'fans', is far worse than anything comic fans come up with.
Then lets not forget movie fans and critics...
Comic fans really are a docile bunch in comparison. |

| And one thing I want to point out is that comics are, after all, merely entertainment. Violence or hurtful words are just uncalled for. |

Being petty and worthless on the internet is a common pastime these days, it seems. That's a huge part of it. My guess is that 99% of the internet tough guys wouldn't have the spine to actually talk smack to any creator's face. Generally threatening violence comes under that aegis as well. I've yet to hear anyone spout anything like that in person, unless it was a joke.
That said, it's tough to ignore these chuckleheads at times. And I'd say that your work as a rule is going to ruffle more feathers than it soothes.
On a related note, the thing I find difficult is to ignore reviews, particularly reviews that were written by people who clearly did not read the book with any attention. Rant for another day, though. _________________

i shook my fist in jeph loebs face and told him "if you got problems with bald people you talk to ME loeb" after he said he was a better writer than grant morrison because he had more hair. i was interviewing ed mcguiness who was seated at the same table, and loeb kept butting in. it was hilarious, and honestly, it was all joking around as we were all cracking up afterwards.
see, thats the perfect example- just because i think the guys writing is terrible and find a lot of what he has to say kinda retarded, im still gonna joke around with him and shit because, cmon, who has time to get angry about shit like this? its comics, people. _________________ "all that time i was dreaming about what i SHOULD be doing, i was already doing what i REALLY wanted to."

I don't generally get angry at bad entertainment. Bored, usually. But I don't have any problem dropping a book or tv show when the quality starts to wane, as opposed to some people who feel like they must keep following the characters. I think fans who feel a sense of ownership of the characters take it personally a creator does something they don't like.
I'll get angry, or at least annoyed, when something is generally good but has some bad choices, but it's not usually directed at the creators, definitely not personal. |

Exhibit fucking A:
http://www.modernmythologypress.com/?p=629
| Quote: | I’m gonna go make a comic about how Jeph Loeb’s son died, i’m sure it will appeal to him.
Mr. Loeb, I’m sorry you’ve lost a artistic credit.
Mr. Loeb, I’m sorry you got fired from Heroes.
Mr. Loeb, I’m sorry you’re bald, over weight, childless, and alone.
But please don’t take it out on the Ultimates ( or me. )
Please Jeph Loeb, just stop writing comics. |

Wow. That's pretty fucking harsh. I don't understand how a person thinks that's in any way legitimate discourse. Say what you will about the man's creative works, but to bring his son into it is just cruel and wholly unnecessary. I mean, would you say that to Jeph Loeb's face? If so, you're an even bigger asshole, I guess. _________________ "It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything." |

It's an extreme example, but can anyone honestly say they were surprised to see a disgruntled fanboy going off like that? I wasn't. But it feels unique to comics... people here have commented how snarky the press can get in music, film, etc., but surely not anything like this? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Childish and nasty.
Like Dina I did try to leave a polite but firm comment but unlike Blogspot/blogger it seems somewhat difficult to do so.
Maybe it's best that I didn't, I mean shouldn't we be ignoring these people not giving them more publicity? If I understood it right, isn't the person involved a comic creator? |

Yeah, I can't say I'm surprised but it's still shocking nonetheless. What gets me is that a bad comic book would make someone angry enough to attack a person's family. It's just carelessness. It must be the lack of vitamin D in the dank basements of the blogospheres around the world. _________________ "I've got 96 tears and 96 eyes" |

A semi-known comics creator took exception to a line in a backmatter essay in Demo and posted intensely nasty things about my past and inheritance from my deceased mother. And that was from a fellow creator. It's kind of all over the place, and a big reason why I have such a love/hate relationship with this career I've chosen.
