BURBANK, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Principal photography is under way on Dark Castle Entertainment’s action adventure “The Losers.” The film is based on the comic book series published under DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, and is being directed by Sylvain White (“Stomp the Yard”).

“The Losers” features an ensemble cast that includes Jeffrey Dean Morgan (“The Watchmen”), Zoë Saldana (“Star Trek”), Chris Evans (“Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer”), Idris Elba (“Obsessed,” “RocknRolla”), Columbus Short (“Stomp the Yard,” upcoming “Whiteout”), Holt McCallany (“Vantage Point”), Óscar Jaenada (“Che: Part Two”) and Jason Patric (“In the Valley of Elah”).

An explosive tale of double cross and revenge, “The Losers” centers upon the members of an elite U.S. Special Forces unit sent into the Bolivian jungle on a search and destroy mission. The team—Clay (Morgan), Jensen (Evans), Roque (Elba), Pooch (Short) and Cougar (Jaenada)—find themselves the target of a lethal betrayal instigated from inside by a powerful enemy known only as Max (Patric). Presumed dead, the group makes plans to even the score when they’re joined by the mysterious Aisha (Saldana), a beautiful operative with her own agenda. Working together, they must remain deep undercover while tracking the heavily-guarded Max, a ruthless man bent on embroiling the world in a new high-tech global war.

Sylvain White directs “The Losers” from a screenplay by Peter Berg (“Friday Night Lights”) and James Vanderbilt (“Zodiac”), based upon comic books written by Andy Diggle and illustrated by Jock. The film is being produced by Joel Silver (“Orphan,” the “Matrix” trilogy) and Academy Award®-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (“A Beautiful Mind,” “I Am Legend”).

The behind-the-scenes creative team includes White’s “Stomp the Yard” director of photography Scott Kevan and editor David Checel, as well as production designer Aaron Osborne (“Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang”), Oscar®-nominated visual effects supervisor Richard Yuricich (“Blade Runner,” “Mission: Impossible II”) and costume designer Magali Guidasci (“AVP: Alien vs. Predator”).

“The Losers” will shoot entirely on location in Puerto Rico.

The film is scheduled for an April 2010 release and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

THE LOSERS starts shooting in two weeks time, in Puerto Rico. The cast is set, the locations scouted and the wardrobe fitting is next week. Will Jensen be wearing his Lennon glasses? Will Cougar have the same style cowboy hat? We shall see…

Up until yesterday, I’d not allowed myself to actually think it was happening, as it’s been well over 3 years since we first met Pete Berg and things started moving. Three (maybe four) directors along the way, hearing it had stalled a number of times, we thought it was unlikely it’d see the light of day. I’m sure that’s part of the course in the movie world, but as it’s been both mine and Andy’s first experience with film, we’ve erred on the side of caution so as not to get our hopes up too much. But it got cast. It got a shooting date. It got a release date. Still, every time we didn’t hear anything for a few weeks, we assumed it probably wasn’t happening.

But yesterday, Joel Silver gave me a call (that was a first), and asked me to draw a one-sheet movie poster for THE LOSERS, to be given away at San Diego Comicon.

I’ll be drawing a version of #12, with some likenesses of the actors in place of the traditional comic cast. Here’s the original cover, in sketch, b/w and finished form.

I’ll have to squeeze in Idris Elba as Roque too, so I guess he takes the place of the palm tree.

I’m sure he’ll be pleased.

More as soon as I know it -

It’s never fun to lose — especially when you’re part of a loyal CIA black-ops squad that’s been hung out to dry by your employer. But Warner Bros. and Silver Pictures are planning to show you the upside of being on the short end of the stick with “The Losers,” the upcoming comic book movie that has just added two new recruits to its cast.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms yesterday’s rumors that Idris Elba will star as Roque in the Sylvain White-directed “The Losers,” based on the DC/Vertigo series. Also joining Elba is Zoe Saldana as the cold-blooded Aisha, the lone female “loser.”

Elba is perhaps best known as the ruthless drug dealer Stringer Bell on “The Wire,” though he previously shared screen time with rumored “Losers” contender Jeremy Renner in “28 Weeks Later.” Saldana, of course, will be seen in this summer’s “Star Trek” revival alongside Chris Pine, the new Captain Kirk and would-be Hal Jordan.

In addition to Elba and Saldana, “The Losers” has already recruited Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Clay and Columbus Short as Pooch. If the rumored involvement of Jeremy Renner turns out to be true — the actor says he wants to play Jensen, the team’s wise-cracking hacker — then the only remaining role on the squad belongs to Cougar, the cowboy hat-wearing sharpshooter that could’ve easily made our best comic book marksmen list. The villainous role of Max has also yet to be cast.

DC/Vertigo’s revamped version of the Jack Kirby comic book classic “The Losers” added another cast member to its mounting arsenal of names this week. The Sylvain White-directed movie already has “Watchmen” star Jeffrey Dean Morgan and possibly “28 Weeks Later” actor Jeremy Renner. Now, Columbus Short has also announced that he’ll be joining the film’s misfit black ops team.

“Right now, it’s slated to start in June,” Short told BlackFilm.com. Short, who recently appeared as Little Walter in “Cadillac Records,” said that he will be playing the role of the team’s vehicle specialist, Pooch.

Short expressed excitement about working with Morgan, as well as having White in the director’s chair.

“It’s going to be a cool project that Sylvain will put his foot into it,” the actor said “When he gets involved with a film, it comes out great.” Short cited “Stomp the Yard” among his favorite projects that he has seen White direct.

Vertigo re-launched the “Losers” series under writer Andy Diggle and artist Jock in 2004. The story follows a group of Special Forces soldiers left for dead by their country and out to get revenge against their former commander.
