Aug 4th: Northlanders Vol 2 is released, with direct market orders of: 4,287 copies.
Sep 30th: My royalty sheet is tallied up and the total sales for the book as of that date is: 9,073 copies.

So the DM is less than half of total TPB sales for Northlanders. Or DM numbers are grossly underreported. Or both.
Is 9,000+ a good number? It seems a bit small, but I have no idea what the baseline is for something like that. _________________ "Just leave one hand against the wall and you can lead yourself out of the labyrinth"

well, also: ordering a trade is not like ordering a single issue. you don't order 20 trades for the shelf, most stores order 1 or 2, because they're physically bigger and more expensive.
if those 2 sell out quickly, you order 2 more and VOILA, your order has doubled overnight.
this is why the "public" numbers that get posted for trades especially are absurd, because initial orders on collected editions tell you almost nothing about the success of that book even in the first week. _________________ -i

For two months, 9000 is a fantastic number. A lot of Big-Two superhero books wish they sold that many. And they'll keep climbing... remember, that 9k was only as of the end of September.
For comparison's sake:
Northlanders vol. 1: 18783
DMZ vol. 2: 34,077
DMZ vol. 1: 57,515
Those numbers don't include the foreign editions. DMZ is published in six languages other than English, up to the fifth volume in some of them.

Yeah, Ivan's right. Typically I see one or two, three at most of a certain trade on the shelves unless the owner thinks it's prospected to do well.
For instance, I think he ordered four of five trades of Jason's 'High Lonesome' SCALPED arc figuring it to do very well. He told me a few days ago he had to make a re-order on the first volume of CHEW too, which is fantastic, considering how great it is.
I always try to buy the trades of all the singles I read from VERTIGO, because I know they base a lot of their series' longevity based on trade sales, or at least so I've heard. |

It would be very nice to think though that there is a market for titles like Northlanders outside the comic shop, and that these figures aren't just comic stores reordering, but bookstores ordering in significant numbers.
That to me would be hopeful sign for the comic industry. |

I know what the bookstore market order numbers were, but I said I wouldn't put them online. I will say they are indeed significant, and suggest a possible new trend for all my books. With each new release, the gap between the two gets smaller and smaller, often to within a few hundred copies.
Although, the DM is still king when it comes to reorders over time.

I haven't been able to find the first trade of Scalped in my quest for holiday gifts last week. I checked two major area stores, and they both sold out of the 2 copies they had on hand.
Sucks that trades are good sellers, but expensive to keep in stock. But yeah, reorders are king. _________________ www.dinareadscomics.com

It's too bad Diamond doesn't do have that holiday program anymore where you could order a set amount of stuff and then ship back what you didn't sell back sometime in January.
I know when I worked for one of the local stores, it helped us stock a lot more for the holidays. Certainly easier than constantly reordering through Star system. _________________ Mark Coale

I thought MARVEL was doing something like this for their upcoming event SIEGE? I may be off. |

Yes/no. There is some program where if they buy a certain amount of Siege #1, some of it is returnable. From what I've been told, that "certain amount" is so high as to exclude some 96% of retailers.
But DC did this with Watchmen when the movie came out.

| Yeah, because my LCS owner was all sorts of pissed because he said MARVEL wasn't quite promoting the return policy on SIEGE right. Something to do with how the little shops won't get nothing out of the deal, just the larger ones. |

I thought Marvel shafting smaller stores was standard operating procedure. A lot of store owners I talked to in the past certainly seem to think so. _________________ '“what’s next,” these days, is always a cloud, not a single arrow.'
