Starting to casually plan out my post-DMZ, post-Demo etc projects. I have a short list of things to write, with the following titles with a single keyword for each.

Starve (culinary)
The Bairns (post-apoc.)
Anthem (punkrock)
Quattrocento (duomo)
Black Lung (mafia)

Pretty sure Dogs Day End is dead. Might cannibalize its best bits for Anthem.

Anyway, this is a pretty pointless post, I realize. But this is sort of a poor man's proof-of-concept, I guess. Plus I like seeing them all in a row like that. Smile

Here is one tidbit: at least one of these will probably be a videogame before its anything else.

Might not be what you think!

ANTHEM is a title that's been haunting me for years. I came up with it early on for The New York Four, and while it didn't fit that story, I loved it anyway. Then I was going to use it for Demo Vol. 2, until I had an idea for a story that worked perfectly.

I'm choosing to believe that Anthem will be a paean to Ayn Rand, since I know you love her so much. Cool

Also, I cannot wait to see how a culinary (?) title will work in your hands. Count me in!

I'm a sucker for any post-apoc story. That one intrigues me the most.

The culinary one is probably the biggest of the bunch, physically... a long running series.

Even better. I just loves me some punk rock fiction, even if that's just the feel or tone of it rather than it actually dealing with punk rock.

Ditto.

I'm interested to know which is likely to end up being a videogame. There's precedent for each of these genres as a game (except for duomo, I'm not sure what that means).

While any new Brian Wood project is a cause for celebration, Anthem is what draws my curiosity the most!

My OCD research illness has been kicking on on this for the past year. Dozens of books read, a friend at the Food Network has let me in to observe some shows, and I've had a couple spectacular meals at chef's tables inside some NYC kitchens. Fascinating stuff.

Not to add to your OCD (as a fellow OCDer I empathize) but you should totally pick up the cookbook 'Alinea' by Grant Achatz. It's a entirely revolutionary way to look at food. Achatz is all about striking memory triggers through smell, sound and texture, and his restaurant resembles more a scientific lab than a kitchen. I had my doubts about molecular gastronomy, thinking it was a gimmick, but after eating at his restaurant my mind was changed. We went there in the fall, and the chef would invoke memories of the fall by doing things like burning leaves with cinnamon and anise in a tiny earthen pot on the table. It totally brought back memories of Thanksgiving afternoon, playing football with my buddies in the backyard and waiting for the turkey and stuffing.

In another setting chef Achatz recreated the smell of a Totino's Party Pizza, which when we went in the kitchen and asked him, he said still remains his pizza of choice. The smell triggered memories, and it mentally set our palate for his version of an after-school snack. He even chose specific music to play in the restaurant to coincide with the progression of the tasting menu. Awe inspiring stuff, truly culinary art.

You can see his food here: http://tinyurl.com/yzpcqe

I think the equivalent of this kind of food in NY is a place called WD-50.

Oh and this was really cool, too. It's a video of a bunch of folks in Williamsburg who decided to recreate the legendary Grant Achatz / Thomas Keller 24-course meal in their apartment.

Would love to be in on that party. Smile
