No. Haven't you read the "English" thread? Clearly, Reuben is jealous because he's a vegetarian.

I think its un-American to read the "English" thread so no I haven't. I can't even believe that these people have their own thread. What next are they gonna tax our tea or something too? (this joke is topical)

Sorry to be so odd yesterday. Feeling much better today, and I didn't even get drunk on account of having a deadline!

Got word yesterday. 18 will be the last. There will be plenty of mind blowing shit in every issue till the last. I'm not going to try and force my "ultimate" ending in there but we will have an end, and as this is a series of endings, I can hold out hope that one day I may see it through to the end I had intended be the end, end..

If any of that makes sense.

I'm mostly bummed because YL was so much Goddamn FUN to work on, and it's not the kind of story that you can just go into from the start. It evolved into what it was and creatively, that was kind of magical and I never took it for granted. I think Shelly Bond might have been the only person other than Maria and I here at El Capitan who would have let me run this course and encourage me to do so. I always wanted to put up a thread on Lee's fantastic coloring, but he did a hell of a job. He took the fear out of coloring for me.

Thanks so much for your support on this thing. Many of you went beyond beyond to keep it going and at least we got a full third trade out of it.

Issue 16 has a few nods to you guys. It's one of my favorite issues. You'll know what I mean when you see it.

So YL is cancelled, but I sure ain't, so don't go anywhere, I'm going to need all y'all's support on whatever the next doomed ship is I hop on.

Thanks to

Again, I'm really sorry about this news. YL is probably the only monthly comic I've never thought about dropping from the 'buy list'. In fact it has been nice to actually buy a regular monthly comic again, as up until YL I'd mainly been buying mini-series and trying the odd new title. (Although none as odd as YL of course.)
Sadly there is nothing out there that is at all close to YL to read instead.
Anyway I look forward to what you write & draw next.

So, what was the name of that comic we are waiting for issue 41 of called again?

i am so bummed right now...well david you know we are your loyal conspirators and will definitely follow what comes next, and talk about it, blog about it and annoy our friends with our pleas to buy it.

fuckshit.

on the "plus" side, at least we know that there are a few issues left of all out crazy!

You're right, what can I say.
But seriously who hasn't fantasized about being David Lapham's punch bag, and crying out "Hit me! Again! Again! Come on, harder! Harder! I've been a very bad boy! Punish me! Faster! Faster! Harder! More! Harder! Yes! Yes! Yes! That's it....."?

....erm... any way... erm... is that the time?..... I really must be off as I've got to ....erm... cut my toe nails... yes, that's it, I've got to cut my toe nails as they have grown since I last looked at them.....

I'm with ya for the long haul David.

YL being canceled broke my heart a little, but I'm totally looking forward to whatever you come up with next. I'm a fan for life, ya heard?

One thing I told my wife last night, and something that bothers me... Is what fuckin' chance do I have writing comic books for a career if something as original and fantastic as YL can't keep going? Ya know? After reading that post yesterday I almost threw out my notebook wondering why the fuck do I even try?

I dunno... Maybe I'm being dramatic. Or maybe I should just start writing shit that requires no thought at all put into it from the reader. God forbid someone have to actually use thier brain when they read a comic book.

Batman walks into the room. The Joker is there.

BATMAN - I'm going to punch you, Joker!
JOKER - C'mere and try!

2.

SOUND EFFECT - POW! BANG!

Rueben has influenced me to extend the original invitation I gave to David, to everyone. I think it'll do the collective conscious good if you all just take the grief out on my body.

Luke, just don't be original and you'll blend into Marvel or DC real well and get a huge paycheck. Just write a story where you kill the Flash again or have a crossover where the characters of Marvel and DC fight each other until they realize they're all good guys, then they defeat the evil thats been pulling their strings all along.

David, is it normal for a company to cancel a book and tell the writer he only has 4 issues left? Even less because you're obviously farther along than that. It just seems like they are pulling the plug immediately instead of leaving you ample room for you to do what you need to finish it sooner than you had hoped. Maybe it is enough room for you to give it a good ending, it just seems pretty shitty to me.

Also, since we won't ever get to see the big grand finale... maybe... you could... just tell us about it? After you're done? Just a thought.

then i usually drink a chocolate stout and cry.

Sooo... I was depressed because those Werner Bremen bastards eliminated my beloved Udinese from the UEFA Cup.

"Self," I thought, "You should totally go on Dave Lapham's Standard Attrition board and quietly lurk and read other's comments about food, comics, music, and other things you enjoy. That will cheer you up."

Except, once I got to these posts, it totally didn't cheer me up. It sucker-punched me in my tummy.

Anyway, I rewrote the next paragraph literally six times. At various points, it was angry, sad, frustrated, and/or a general self-indulgent rant about the comic industry and its readers and its politics and its own self-loathing and adolescent refusal to embrace anything different from boring, heartless fan fiction. I kept deleting it because (a) I'm sort of preaching to the choir in many respects and (b) that shit's self-defeatist, y'know?

So here's the final version of aforementioned oft-rewritten paragraph:

David,
Thank you for
Young Liars. I've loved every challenging issue thus far and it's been a privilege to plunk down three bucks (ish) every month. For what it's worth, yours was--is--my favourite ongoing comic book.
Your signed Sadie sketch is framed on my upper landing wall and I was so giddy the day I got it in the mail I was too embarrassed to thank you for it.
Thank you for it.
(Thanks also for starting the most recent issue on my 31st birthday. I'm pretending it was a carefully meditated decision on your part.)
I'm looking forward to whatever is next.

Erik

I'll hold onto that because part of me can't give up on completing it one day.

I went through this possibility at 12 and again at 15. twelve could have been the end and I would have been very satisfied with the way it ended there. Because I had thousands of fans but not quite enough thousands I knew that every arc would have to have an ending. Also because of the nature of the book, I knew I could always spin that ending into more stories. See? It's that kind of book, but I think you all know that.

As far as cutting me off with only four issues to go, well, there was a day when they cancelled a book and all worked just stopped, so I'm happy to have these last four.

I think I would like to be given a few issues to finish a series off after it was canceled.

Not that YL getting canceled is fun.... But I think it could be kinda fun to say "Alright, I've got 4 issues left, lets get fuckin' CRAZY!"

And telling us your actual ending is an idea I disapprove of completely. If you never get to do anything again, take that shit to the grave.

But email it to me just before you die.

Holy crap I wasn't going to read this thread since I'm 2 weeks behind on my comics and I didn't want spoilers but since I'm an impatient loser I clicked it anyway, and now I just got the WORST of all spoilers.

Mannnnnn, that sucks so bad.

I loved Young Liars, but the wonderful thing was that I'm definitely not alone in that fact. I hope one day you get to finish telling your story.

On the other hand, I'm sure all of us SA'ers are more than willing to buy you a consolation beer (or 5).

Le sigh. One more truly unique and interesting book gone. Here's pouring one out for Danny and the gang.

David,

Thank you. I'm upset YL is ending, but I'm also glad that I got to (and get to) read the issues that were (and will be) published. Like everyone else here, I'll be following you to Sparta, U.S.A and all your other future projects. But again, thanks.
